Vendor Spotlight – Custom wedding Jewelry Designer Emily Scott from e.scott originals

Recently I was booked to shoot the wedding of a lovely Somerville artist named Emily. She is the owner and custom jewelry designer at e.scott originals. I thought it would be perfect to showcase her business on my blog to fellow brides-to-be who maybe looking for unique wedding rings or bridal party gifts.

This week I got to tour her jewelry studio at 199b Highland Ave in Somerville, MA, and take some photos of her, and her assistant Nora, in action. Her cute studio is nestled in a block of great local small businesses that are also a close knit community of small business owners.

If you are in the area, definitely check out her shop and all the gorgeous handmade precious metal jewelry she has for sale. Perfect for bridesmaids gifts. For the man in your life, she also has a line of manwear, including tie bars and cuff links. Perfect to go with your groom’s, or groomsmen, attire and as groomsmen gifts.

When you visit her shop, you will meet Mayble, her canine fur baby. Mayble has inspired a line of brass I.D. tags for your four legged best friend.

Emily also create custom engagement and wedding rings. Her shop is perfect for those brides looking for unique quality handmade wedding jewelry.   My husband and I also opted for custom wedding rings when we got married. It is nice to have a one of a kind creation that speaks to your style, and also to support local artists.

What made you decided to become a jeweler/Education:

My fascination with jewelry began when I was three years old and I first found my Grandmother’s jewelry box. I put on every necklace, ring and bracelet and thought I looked like the most glamorous girl in the world. I should have know that this is where I’d end up!

After high school in a small town, I was desperate to be in a city so I went to Boston University for advertising with dreams of being a high-powered businesswoman in a penthouse office, working for a billion dollar corporation. I quickly realized, however, that the corporate world wasn’t for me. Turns out I’m not very competitive and I don’t like wearing suits…

heather_fuller_photography_escott_custom_wedding_rings_shop_behind_the_scenes_artist_workingI had always been a builder and fixer of things, whether it be beaded jewelry or doll houses or forts outside. During college, I started wearing beaded jewelry that I had made and people began asking to buy it. I decided that maybe this was something I was good at and I was dying to do more with it, so after graduation I decided to attend the Jewelry Making and Repair program at the North Bennet Street School. It was there I learned the metalworking, stone setting skills and fine jewelry techniques I would need to turn my craziest ideas into pieces of wearable art. It opened my eyes to a whole new world that has now become by career.

Why is jewelry my passion/what do I enjoy most?

Making jewelry is a way to create things that are meant to last a lifetime. Each piece has a special meaning to the wearer and to know that I can be apart of that makes what I do important. I make jewelry that is meant to be worn daily and loved forever. I like to think that I’m creating new heirlooms for people to pass down through generations.

What can couples expect working with me on wedding rings?

Each custom experience is based 100% on the couple. I always sit down with couples at our first meeting and talk about their likes, dislikes, budget, timeline and “what they want out of their ring”.  After that we talk design, which can lead to sketches or models, to help the customer get a good idea of what their ring will look like. Once the customer is happy with the design, we get it done!

Advice about designing custom rings:

I always stress that your rings should be for you, you’re the one wearing it! Rings can be as funky or a classic as the customer would like, no job is too simple. I encourage customers to think about timelessness as well. Would you want to wear that in 30 years? Rings can be a big investment, so we want to make sure that its a good investment that customers will love forever. Besides photos, it’s the thing that will last long past your wedding day!

What’s next for e. scott?

Who knows! I like to live one day at a time and see where it takes me. I’ve been working on expanding my line of customizable wedding jewelry (e. scott nuptials) and I’d like to see where that can go. I’m so lucky to do what I love, so if I get to do it another day I’m a happy girl.

custom wedding ringsEmily’s quote “Besides photos, it’s the thing that will last long past your wedding day” rings so true.  Photography and our wedding bands comprised 50% of our wedding budget.    We found lots of other ways to cut costs, but those two things for me and my husband were most important since they will be with us for the rest of our (and our future generations) lives.
